Program Introduction
The BMO Camp in the UK is organized by UKMT and is designed to train and select exceptional students for the British Mathematical Olympiad National Team, which represents the UK in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The camp not only fosters a deeper understanding of advanced mathematical concepts but also encourages collaboration among top mathematics students. By solving challenging mathematical problems, students enhance their critical thinking and problem-solving skills—qualities highly valued by top universities worldwide.
Organized by the UKMT, the BMO Camp at Oxford traditionally trains the UK IMO Team. Now open to Chinese BMO students, this elite program is led by former IMO Chair Dr. Geoff Smith and Cambridge tutor Dr. Andrea Chlebikova. Mirroring the UK-based Oxford camp, the curriculum focuses on IMO themes and advanced concepts like calculus, emphasizing deep mathematical exploration and critical thinking, providing a significant advantage for those aspiring to apply to Oxford or Cambridge. Students will participate in a traditional Oxford formal dinner and be awarded a certificate in the unique vibe.

Dr. Geoff Smith graduated from the University of Oxford and served 15 times as Head Coach of the British Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) national team. Between 2014 and 2022, he was twice elected President of the IMO and designed its remote examination system, enabling the competition to continue worldwide. He is also the founder of the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) and organized its inaugural edition at the University of Cambridge in 2012. He is the author of the BMO guides The Mathematical Olympiad Primer (for BMO 1) and Mathematical Olympiad Companion (for BMO 2), which are widely used by British mathematics students. Now retired from full-time work, he serves as an Honorary Mathematics Scholar at the University of Bath. His research focuses primarily on group theory and geometry, with occasional work in combinatorics applied to biochemistry.

As a pre-university student, Andrea was a keen maths olympiad student who was on the UK team participating in the CGMO in 2010 and achieving a silver medal. She decided to pursue Natural Sciences at university, joining St Catharine's College, Cambridge in 2011 and specialising in Chemistry. Andrea stayed in Cambridge to pursue a PhD in Atmospheric Chemistry and started teaching undergraduates in 2015. Since 2021, she has been working for Isaac Physics and preparing students from underrepresented backgrounds for studying STEM subjects at university as part of the STEM SMART programme. Despite specialising in chemistry, Andrea maintains a keen interest in recreational maths and has been an active UKMT volunteer since 2011, marking maths olympiads, leading sessions at residentials and presenting solution videos among other roles. She also supports younger students' maths challenge and maths olympiad ambitions by acting as a tutor at Simon Singh's Parallel Academy.

Academic Module
Module1:IMO contents
Students will delve into the analysis of IMO problems and under the guidance of coaches. By explaining classic problems and solutions from previous years, students will be inspired to master strategies for solving complex problems, and mathematical reasoning skills.
Module2:Advanced mathematical thinking
Advanced mathematical thinking aims to enhance students' ability to solve complex problems, stimulate creative thinking, and develop logical reasoning skills.

Student Reflections
”Students attending the BMO Oxford Camp are all highly gifted in mathematics, and most already have the ability to tackle BMO Round 2 problems. However, the key issue we need to address here is this: finding the answer alone is not enough — you must learn how to clearly present your logic to the examiner. This is precisely the core value of the BMO Oxford Camp — we transform talent into rigorous mathematical language, helping students make the leap from "problem-solver" to mathematician.“
— Dr. Geoff Smith MBE, Former Chair of the British Mathematical Olympiad (BMO), Member of the IMO Board, Head Coach of BMO CAMP
”Although I achieved the Top in the World award in GCSE Mathematics, the BMO Oxford Camp brought me into a completely different mathematical world. It goes far beyond the school syllabus, focusing on higher-level logical thinking and competitive mathematics. Through visiting Oxford and Cambridge in person, and engaging in intellectual exchanges with outstanding peers from around the world and top-tier mentors, I discovered the true joy of competitive mathematics. This was a transformative journey that elevated me from being 'good at maths' to truly 'loving maths'.”
— Student Kim, 2025 BMO Camp at Oxford
“What struck me most at the BMO Oxford Camp was Dr. Geoff Smith's metaphor: if school maths is searching for something in a lit room, then tackling advanced mathematics is exploring the unknown in a dark room. I came to realise that those once-daunting international top-tier problems are not as unreachable as they seemed. Here, I wasn't just solving problems—I was learning to adapt to the dark and feel the true contours of mathematics.”
— Student Chen, 2025 BMO Camp at Oxford
“I used to think that only applied mathematics led to good careers, while pure mathematics was just dry research. But the university guidance sessions at the BMO Oxford Camp completely shattered that stereotype, showing me that both applied and pure paths offer bright futures. Academically, the professors' lectures precisely targeted my long-standing weaknesses in number theory and calculus. Beyond the classroom—from street-level cultural exploration to in-depth seminars at Pembroke College—every day was a journey of discussion and shared growth with fellow students.”
— Student Li, 2025 BMO Camp at Oxford
