Program Introduction

British Mathematical Olympiad (BMO), organized by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT), is designed to identify and train members of the UK national team for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). Each year, the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge support UKMT by hosting BMO training camps on their campuses. These camps are by invitation only, extended to outstanding performers in that year's BMO, to prepare them for the upcoming IMO selection process.

Since 2023, the British Mathematical Olympiad Committee, in partnership with ASEEDER, has brought this world-class training camp to China. Over two consecutive years of successful operation, hundreds of Chinese students have benefited from the program. In 2025, the program was significantly upgraded to become the BMO Asia Camp, establishing a high-level academic exchange platform for mathematical talents from across Asia. Professor and UKMT BMO National Team Head Coach Dr. Dominic Yeo personally leads a coaching team from Oxford to deliver the program in China. The camp adopts the same curriculum and teaching methods used for the UK national team, guiding students to explore more challenging mathematical topics. The course covers core IMO subject areas including Algebra, Combinatorics, Geometry, and Number Theory. In addition, mathematics coaches from Cambridge and Oxford will share application insights into mathematics-related programs at Oxford, helping students better plan their future academic paths.

Pre-Assessment

British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1 (UKMT-BMO): Nov. 19, 2026 (Thu.), Grades 10-12

Academic Highlights

World-Class Mentors, Unleashing Unlimited Potential

A number of distinguished figures from the mathematics world will come to China to teach at the camp, including Geoff, President of the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO); Paul, Head Coach of the Swedish National IMO Team; Dominic, Head Coach of the UK National IMO Team; and Alessandra Caraceni, Chair of the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad. Their expert guidance will offer students unparalleled perspectives and depth in their mathematical studies.

Authoritative Training, International Standards

Students will experience the same training content used for the UK National Mathematical Olympiad team. Topics range from the Five-Step Ladder and the Same-Expression Method, to Eulerian circuit determination, and the Pigeonhole Principle and factorial functions in combinatorics—each packed with substantive knowledge. Coaches will guide students through high-school Olympiad-level problems, helping them connect abstract concepts with deep logical applications and cultivating their ability to tackle complex problems with clarity and rigor.

Authentic Oxford-Cambridge Experience, Preparing for Future Success

Mock Oxbridge interviews will give students a firsthand taste of the admissions process at these top institutions. Through coach demonstrations and hands-on practice, participants will gain real insight into what elite university interviews entail, while also experiencing the vibrant academic and cultural life at UK universities—building a solid foundation for their future academic journeys.

High-Value Completion Certificate, Showcasing Excellence

Every participant will receive a prestigious certificate of completion at the end of the camp, attesting to their dedication and achievements. This distinguished credential will serve as a valuable addition to their future academic applications and professional pursuits.

Previous Lectures & Courses

* Below are introductions of past lectures & courses. Specific practical lectures & courses are subject to adjustment based on actual circumstances.

Geometry

Starting with classic concepts including circumcircle, orthocenter and centroid, the lesson introduces competition‑level techniques such as the Power of a Point, Radical Axis and Radical Center, and illustrates their applications with concrete examples.

Number Theory

Beginning with the definition of prime numbers and divisibility properties, the lesson proves the infinitude of primes via Euclid’s proof by contradiction. It then introduces modular arithmetic (mod), and explains algorithms for computing the greatest common divisor (gcd / hcf). Emphasis is placed on Bézout’s identity and its proof, from which the Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic is derived.

Graphs and Colourings

The lesson starts with the Seven Bridges of Königsberg to introduce Eulerian circuits and their existence criteria. It presents the historical context of the Four‑Colour Theorem, and proves the Six‑Colour Theorem using Euler’s formula and the Handshaking Lemma. The session concludes with the IMO original problem “Hunter and Rabbit”, showcasing constructive approaches including injective colouring and rapidly‑expanding cycles.

Functional Equations

It mainly covers standard techniques including variable substitution, constructing simultaneous equations, exploiting symmetry and special‑value analysis. Worked examples demonstrate problem‑solving procedures and reasoning strategies for functional equations.

Combinatorics

Core methods such as greedy construction, inductive construction and binary‑splitting strategies are highlighted. Partition and identification problems are used to show how techniques like “taking the maximum feasible element”, “covering the smallest untreated object” and “narrowing the candidate set” apply to construction‑type problems.

Student Reflections

"We provide students with many problems to develop their ability to solve problems in very difficult situations. Students really need to practise thinking in such challenging circumstances; they need to do it themselves, they need to think for a long time, and they need to get better and better at it over time. It is clear that some Chinese students are very creative and can think quickly and imaginatively."

— Dr. Geoff Smith MBE, Head Coach of BMO CAMP

"BMO Asia Camp is held in China, and this is a very rare opportunity, because the British Mathematical Olympiad training camp offers only a limited number of places, which means that only the top candidates get the chance to come here and study mathematics. Its unique teaching approach, delivered by the coaching team from Trinity College, Cambridge, means that this is a very high-quality camp."

— Student Li, 2025 BMO ASIA CAMP

"They (the BMO coaching team) have arranged four subjects throughout our entire schedule, which is a perfect combination of socialising and learning mathematics. I would definitely recommend this camp, because it truly helps to improve students' mathematical skills and enables us to be better prepared for the exams we will take in the future."

— Student Zou, 2025 BMO ASIA CAMP
