About PMC
University of Pennsylvania & Applied Mathematics
Founded in 1740, the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the United States and a globally renowned member of the Ivy League. As a pioneer in interdisciplinary education, Penn has consistently emphasized the integration of mathematics, science, and real-world problem-solving. Guided by its core philosophy of “applying knowledge in service to society,” Penn has cultivated generations of globally influential leaders across diverse fields. Its distinguished alumni include 36 Nobel Laureates, 17 Turing Award winners, as well as numerous recipients of the Pulitzer Prize and the MacArthur Fellowship.
In the fields of mathematics and applied mathematics, Penn positions mathematics as a tool for solving complex real-world challenges. Mathematical methodologies are widely applied in financial modeling, artificial intelligence, engineering systems, and decision sciences. The Wharton School is globally recognized for excellence in quantitative finance and business analytics, while the School of Engineering and Applied Science continues to drive innovation in AI, computational engineering, and data science.
Penn’s mathematical education tradition emphasizes logical reasoning, problem-solving, and collaborative skills, leveraging its deep academic heritage and interdisciplinary strengths to cultivate innovators capable of applying math thinking to real-world challenges.
About PMC
The Penn Math Contest (PMC), officially initiated by the Penn Mathematics Club, is a team-based mathematics challenge that embodies the educational philosophy of Ivy League institutions. Since its inception, PMC has been committed to building an international platform for students passionate about mathematics that emphasizes exploration, academic exchange, and collaborative innovation.
The design philosophy of PMC closely aligns with Penn’s interdisciplinary and application-oriented educational approach. The contest may involve results from Algebra, Number Theory, Geometry, and Combinatorics, and adopts a hybrid format combining team-based and individual challenges. This structure enables a comprehensive assessment of logical reasoning, mathematical reasoning, problem-solving, and team collaboration. It further incorporates elements of applied mathematics, operations research and optimization, and economic mathematical thinking, forming a multidimensional evaluation system that reflects Penn’s commitment to holistic talent development.
In 2026,ASEEDER establishes a strategic partnership with PMC, introducing PMC to Asia for the first time, offering outstanding students opportunities for international exchange and competition, while providing a valuable academic platform for those pursuing studies in mathematics, computer science, and engineering.

Core Rounds
* The above sessions are for reference only and are subject to the actual situation.
Individual Challenge
——Three Core Rounds
The Individual challenge comprises 3 rounds: Proof, Theory and Application. Each round is 45 minutes. All questions carry equal weight. The question number is subject to actual papers. For tied scores, rankings are decided by the position of students' first incorrect answer. Those who answer their first incorrect question later receive a better rank.* Individual Challenge Awards: Individual Overall & Round Awards
1
Team Round
90 minutes; 8 major problems with 20 sub-questions. All questions carry equal weight. This round emphasizes team collaboration, and strategic decision-making. Students can discuss ideas and cooperate with each other.
2
Relay Round
This round adopts a relay format with time limits for each set of problems. Follow-up questions are based on prior results. Each part is completed by team members in order. Student 1 finishes the first section, and Students 2 solves the next using the prior answer, and so forth. This round includes multiple relay sets.

Scoring Rules
Scoring Rules
●PMC adopts the "4-1-0" scoring system: Correct answer: 4 points; Blank answer: 1 point; Incorrect answer: 0 points
●All scores are presented as percentages, rather than raw totals: Score Percentage =Team Score/Round Score
●Team Overall = Individual Challenge (20% Proof + 15% Application + 15% Theory) + 40% Team Round + 10% Relay Round
* Individual Challenge team score = Total Individual Scores / Team Size. Minimum team size: 4. Teams with fewer members will count missing participants as 0, with the total divided by 4.
Awards
* All awards are evaluated and granted separately for junior and senior divisions.Individual Awards
●TOP 3 ●Gold: Top 10% ●Silver: Top 25% ●Bronze: Top 40% * Individual challenge awards are divided into the Individual Overall & Round Awards.Team Awards
